OT - Way back when NFLX was just a kid (ok a teen ;) and Block Buster still had a store in every corner (but bleeding) I approached them with an idea to save them. I proposed they give every local store fiber and leverage their local stores to provide on-demand DVDs of anything they can get their hands on. My vision was to have stores full of self serve kiosks where people could browse movies (movie equivalent of Amazon's view to inside the book). then if the DVD was in the store, they'd get it, otherwise they'd burn a dvd on demand and rent it. The point was that (a) they would have been able to provide it faster than personal download and (b) it would get to customer faster than snail mail. Keep in mind that there was no such thing as on-demand video at that time (from anybody, including cable and Netflix). Long story short, the turned it down, on the surface because they thought it to be a legal minefield, but in my opinion because they did not realize their life depended on it.
