I can't remember if it was here or in person that I heard a South African discuss the issue. He basically, said life was better under the "white rule" but the Africans prefer to have low quality of life but be free than to have white masters who give them better life. It is human nature. Keep in mind that Africa still suffers from the legacy of colonization and slavery. All those straight line borders you see on the map are points of dispute because they don't comply with any natural or ethnic boundaries. And the west still funds and arms all sides of the wars.
