I was 14 years old, in the middle of my freshman year at Bogan High School in Chicago (back when the Chicago Public schools still had January graduating classes). I was on my way to lunch when I noticed some commotion in the audio visual room. The room was half filled with students and faculty gathered around a television set. President John Kennedy had been shot. I never made it to lunch.

When the bell rang to end the period I did go to my next class. Our teacher was sobbing and the students all just sat there stunned. Eventually, an announcement came over the loud speaker that President Kennedy had died and that school was dismissed. I ran all the way home (about two and a half miles) and plopped myself in from of the television.

We were at the height of the Cold War and I remember being fearful that we were on the brink of a nuclear war. I also remember thinking that things were never going to be the same. It turns out that I was correct. We were at the beginning of a major buildup in Vietnam and the country was in the early stages of a cultural revolution.
