A former Chinese official who was in charge of Communist Party discipline was executed today for accepting bribes of more than $4.7 million, the government-run Xinhau news agency reported.

Zeng Jinchun had been sentenced to death in 2008 by a court in Hunan province for taking the money over a nine-year period ending in 2006 and doling out mining contracts and job promotions in return. The court found that he was unable to account for about $1.4 million of his assets. His appeal was turned down in 2009.

Zeng was executed by shooting, according to Xinhua.

Zeng was former secretary of the Chenzhou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China.

The execution followed a pledge a day earlier by Communist Party officials in Beijing to root out corruption that has caused civil unrest around the country, The Associated Press noted.
