I assume you're referring to this banner:

hello clark kent,

and yes, i'm referring to that banner. i no longer have to look at it because i went deep into quicken over the weekend and found the record where i sent check #3404 for $75 to join silicon investor - a stock bulletin board - on 27 september, 1997.

apparently, many people who were on si those first few years did not have to pay anything to access the site because their contributions drew so many people like me. i was enthralled with silicon investor when i first found it...what great insight it offered into so many aspects of the market that i never knew existed! they gave me access for only 30 days and i couldn't bear the thought of not being able to get on and read the comments, so i paid.

i do question their decision to require those contributors to either look at the banner or look at the ads or pay now. but it is the current mind set...immediate gratification of the money in hand, in lieu of the attraction their insights bring to the market - and so many other things, really. i'd be rather proud to have the veteran status on my page, as long as it came without that banner.
