They sure do when one ignores many of the actual facts, and one is biased towards one ideology or party.

The main thing that's missing is GAAP accounting (unless of course the intention is to not pay accrued expenses /sarc). Adding it back in completely changes the picture, and shows the huge continuing growth in the current administration. Adding CPI based inflation also greatly changes the picture.

Another is failing to include changes in total debt, either federal or total. Another frequent trick, a favorite of Krugman and similar spinners, is to use federal public debt, rather than federal total debt.
