As data volume reaches unmanageable levels in large organizations, and
traditional storage methods prove inadequate to the task of delivering
data quickly, several technologies are emerging that claim to solve the
problem are competing for the attention of systems managers and their
impatient users. Proposed fixes include faster and more powerful
multiprocessor-based servers, building bigger pipes through
infrastructure upgrades, advances in data warehousing technology,
clustering software from companies like Novell, Microsoft and Sun, and a
new group of devices called directly-attached and network-attached
peripherals, which rely on advanced switching technology to increase
throughput b as much as 500 percent above conventional storage
solutions.
This session focuses on the pros and cons of each data management model,
and in particular on this new class of direct access devices.
