I think you are right about Chrome it is Google's product anyway and who is the bigger data collector than Google.... In the past I shy away from Firefox because of bugs and crashes but I'm back and I like it now. I don't know if Firefox on it's own is the most secure, but there are excellent addons (extensions) that try to protect you even further. Let me show you.
But first, I'm answering this by using Firefox Mozilla browser (you don't even have to install it if you are using portable version) and I have BlockAdd Plus installed and enabled and I can answer here without disabling anything. But look at these extensions:
1 - you know first one
2 - didn't play with second one yet,
3 - this one is interesting - AnonymoX - your web browsing goes through their servers, changing your IP. Now all those highly tech codes that recognize you by IP, can't recognize you any more. There is a draw back, it is a little slower browsing if you are using free version (i do for now) and you are getting small pop up (here we go again lol) add at the bottom, but it is tolerable for now. I like that small add (doesn't pop up all the time and as soon as you click on any link it is gone so you can simple ignore it) ... better than being tracked by 10+ companies per most web sites. on I hub tracks you 11 or 12 companies.
4 - better privacy extension blocks those new, more intrusive cookies
5 - do not track me extension - I love it, in upper right corner shows you how many companies (and which ones) are trying to track you and at the same time they get blocked. So you have double protection agains tracking, blocking tracking and just for extra measurement, if someone do bypass this first protection, you have different (fake) IP, different identity. This will not stop NSA of course but should most noisy companies.
5 - and last one, DuckDuckGo - anonymous web searcher, to replace Google search engine. You can set it as default search engine and they do not track you, your IP, or store your searches.
And all is automatic, I don't need to do anything. (well did had to manually put SI filters into AdBlockPlus)

Edit, adding these, that I forgot to include:
LastPass - takes care for all your passwords, with one master password but it is stored online. I love it but they better don't get hacked or I'm in trouble.
Lightbeam - just playing with it for now, nice graphical presentation of others snooping you
NoScrips - everyone knows this one.
Speed Dial and Tab Mix Plus are not security related (but makes my life easier a little bit lol)
WOT - Web Of Trust - shows you (color coded circles) if search result/links are safe to click on.
