Pigboy - Re: "How long before MPEG2 is part of the Pentium Line?"

Intel's Pentium II (MMX) can do MPEG-2 decoding in software and I think can also do AC-3 audio decoding. It would appear that Intel is positioning themselves to supply the CPU-centric set-top box, since some sort of CPU would probably be required even with a dedicated MPEG-2 decoder such as from CUBE.

By addressing the PC AND HDTV (Progressive scan and Interlaced Scan), Intel is taking the high ground - again, leveraging the power of its progammable CPUs.

Re: "your opinions on NUMA?"

NUMA-Q, as implemented by Sequent, is a tremendous way of harnessing Intel's Pentium Pro - I think at least 32 CPUs can be linked in the Sequent configuration. The software is critical and Sequent has been able to support the 32 Pentium Pros with a very flexible O/S .

The Sequent NUMA-Q implementation is very powerful. I keep thinking that Sequent will be a perfect target for a "takeover" by a company that wants to get quickly into the high end enterprise transaction processing/server segment - HP, Dell, IBM or even DEC would seem to be likely candidates.

Data General has also implemented their own NUMA architecture for Pentium Pros but I'm not familiar with the details of the DG approach.

Re: "do you think its insane to be looking there or more like an investment in amd, useless?"

I don't quite understand what you are asking here. Can you re-phrase your question?
