I agree that the pre-trib rapture view will be a reason for many of them to apostasize, but also, there are many who believe in post and amillennialism (that the church is to usher in the millennial age themselves) who will be caught in the judgments. They too will join in the apostasy. Isaiah 8:21-22 I think fits those caught by surprise when things go very bad as stated in Revelation, "They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and curse their king and their God, and look upward. Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness."
