I was in sixth grade class. Mrs Angell was the teacher and she said she didn't know why people did these things but the President had been shot. I recall me immediately joking with a kid sitting next to me ... something about all right, where were you when this happened? I've always regretted that since I know that kid and anyone else nearby will carry the memory of me reacting with unconcern and being able to make a stupid joke.

I can't help it. I've gone through life watching people react with shock when they first hear someone has died suddenly and I've been there with them and wondered why they feel shocked and I don't. Even people I loved dearly. Don't people know bad things happen? Still I do remember the moment of hearing that Kennedy had been killed.

I've read that George Bush, the elder, says he doesn't remember when he heard about Kennedy's death. So I guess everyone doesn't remember.
