Carolyn:

Repair or reinstalling Outlook shouldn't delete any email, contacts, calendar items, etc… just like reinstalling Word won’t delete any Word documents. In fact, it will leave most, if not all, your settings intact as well.

Backup before your proceed anyway! Making frequent backups of your Outlook data (pst-files) just like backing up your PC is a good practice and before you start the repair it's a good idea to make an additional backup. For step-by-step instructions to backup and restore Outlook data go to:

howto-outlook.com

You could also consider doing a download of the MS Office analyzer tool to possibly determine the problem:

microsoft.com

Most people today use web based email providers of which I have several accounts through organizations that I belong that insist on my having an account for communication, but I am still a fan of Outlook and use it as my personal and business default email.
