Fuchi,

Here is another article about the sub-$1,000 PCs:

twice.virtualmarketing.com

Word of Compaq's plans to offer an AMD-based Presario, which set a new bargain price for a K6 233-based system, took vendors by surprise at Comdex last month, sending many back to the drawing board to revise product plans for the December-February time frame...

...According to Compaq's latest retail briefings, its new aggressive Presario lineup will launch this month, leading with the much-anticipated AMD K6 233MHz model that includes 32MB of RAM, a 3.2GB hard drive, 20X CD-ROM drive and 56K modem in its estimated street price of $1,099. The system's price is slated to drop to $999 on January 14...

...Pionex is responding with a 180MHz Cyrix MediaGX-based PC with 16MB of RAM, a 1.6GB hard drive, 20X CD-ROM and 33.6-Kbps modem at an estimated street price of $799, or $899 when bundled with a monitor.

Who is Pionex?

BTW, AMD even cacheless, is going to kick some serious butt. With 64K L1 and 32MB RAM, it will outperform all Pentium-MMX systems.
