I was in 6th grade in a St. Louis County Catholic grade school. It was right after lunch and a few of the kids would walk home for lunch and come back before class started. One of those young ladies sat next to me and when she came back, she announced that Kennedy had been shot. From a timing perspective this had to have been before 12:30 CST so I think the header should read 12:30 PM EST.

When she first announced that Kennedy was shot, I thought she said Jackie but she quickly clarified in was JFK. A couple of the girls starting crying, one was so distraught that it bordered on hysteria. By this time our lay teacher Mr. Kraus had returned and ran out of the room. The school had a few TV sets that where on large pedestals that wheeled around. We used to watch PBS classes on the US constitution on them once a week. Our teacher returned with one of these TV sets and we watched the development in real time.

I remember that he kept flipping around on the channels ABC, CBS. NBC - by this time all of the network were covering the event. One of the things that struck me then was watching news unfold real time. Back then I watched the news with my father he got home from work. It wasn't my choice ,but we had only 1 TV and there wasn't much else on in that time period. The main point was that the reporters usually sat at a desk and talked about what happened sometimes with photos or video. In this case, they were sitting at the news desk while others worked the phones to get developments.

I remember seeing this broadcast in the classroom:

youtube.com

I tried to embed the video but that feature doesn't seem to be working now.

A couple of things were said on this one that possibly get one fired today. At one point Frank McGee said :There were a lot of Negroes standing around" . Chet Huntley was working the phones and McGee was talking to there guy on the ground in Dallas.

Compare and contrast how news unfolds today with twitter, the internet and live coverage.

A couple of other major recollections besides watching the funeral events:

My family went to dinner at my grandmother's and she told us about the assassination of Oswald. She had just seen it on TV and she said something to the effect: "This guy just walks up to him and boom, boom, boom shoots him".

One other thing that I recall was my father (life long conservative) giving me grief around the stoic way that I took in all the information. He asked me, "Don't you care?" I did care but JFK wasn't family.

Looking back, the person that I admire most from all of this was Jackie Kennedy.
