Bill: Flywheels have tempted many engineers over the years, but there are some serious problems with the approach that no one seems to have solved just yet. In fact, a few weeks ago a major flywheel project, Rosen Moters, financed by the chairman of Compaq, closed down after blowing through $20,000,000.

I think the problem is that flywheels have to be heavy and moving very fast to be effective. This requires very exotic materials for the flywheel and the bearings, as well as a very sturdy cage around it. There is a safety risk of the flywheel getting loose in a car crash and slicing through anyone in its way.
