It mostly boils down to alleviating fear in accepting things that make no sense. Hiding under the covers of their empty days hoping the demons of the night don't descend on them and tear them to shreds. They are willing to sell out rather than pursue their own free will. When they see someone not afraid they are embarrassed and angry at their own shortcomings and resort to chimpanzee behaviour pounding their chest and hurling feces.

Chasing miracles like the shroud is another example of weak faith. If they had true faith they would not need shrouds, walking on water, dividing the sea or magically multiplying loaves of bread. The sun rising in the morning or a blade of grass would be proof enough but the faithless people are always demanding.

Mother Teresa did not believe in alleviating suffering but wanted the suffering to suffer more in a perfect imitation of Christ on the cross. She herself was more than happy to jump on a plane to fly to an awards ceremony or accept money for her charity.

Brum, Blash and Gregoree are just slack jawed yokels at the carnival thinking the magic is real.
