AOL is not analagous to the Mac, because AOL's proprietary architecture is not essential to their product.

Everything on AOL can be done in HTML, and the AOL guys are perfectly capable of making the switch. Its not that tough, we're talking six months soup to nuts. Probably take them longer to renegotiate their supplier contracts than it will to write the new code.

They're just waiting for the advertising market to mature a little, to the point where the benefits of widening their audience outweigh the benefits of posting higher subscriber figures.

They won't preannounce the switch to HTML, because their subscriber numbers would fall off a cliff.
