It is not a slogan. I was trying to be brief. When it comes to the society, fundamentally there is only two forces at work: protectionism and freedom. Protectionism is about pressing one's advantages. The advantage can be buying legislation or consolidating power or redirecting funds to your neighborhood or whatever. Both left and right typically crave for this. A tit-for-tat is the usual justification.

Freedom is about tearing down the barriers and letting the chips fall where they may. In the old days the barriers were clearly marked, being black, an Indian, or woman told you what you could not be. Being from a certain family (or lack there of) would tell you if you had a place in the ruling elite. Over time those barriers have been replaced with more covert ones which accomplish the same ends. For example it used to be that belonging to one of the top 100 families overtly entitled you to vast social privileges. Now being in a top 100 family entitles you to buying laws that entitles you to those same privileges. Or it used to be that you could hang a sign that said no low born people are allowed. Now you simply restrict the membership to people who could have afforded a Harvard education or other "qualifications" that only the high society can afford.

Back to the point...I don't care about the protection or subsidies that a government can throw my way. This includes cheap healthcare pork barrel projects in my area - no matter how much I personally think those projects are worthy causes. But I do care a lot about government tearing down the barriers and preventing big money from buying legislature. If that is fixed, all else falls into place. If not, it is just rearranging the seats on the Titanic.
