When Mandela was caught, convicted and sent to prison, he was a communist pursuing violent revolution. If he'd been successful, he'd have been another Mugabe. But instead he was confined to prison for almost 30 years. Part of it was spent breaking rocks. Other parts were spent in solitary confinement, allowed only one visitor per year. After he was released, he joined in governing with de Klerk, the Afrikaner who freed him, left South Africa's economy in private hands, pursued reconciliation and stepped down after one term as President.
There is a lesson we can draw from this. Locking up leftists for decades works.
