Yes, slave owners quoted scripture from ancient times to support their institution. Did you know Buddhist slave owners once defended slavery based on the view that suffering as a slave was a result of karma from a past life, though the Buddha did ban owning slaves for monks and nuns and say participation in the slave trade was wrong. Buddhist Bhutan was actually the last country to outlaw slavery in 1962. What's unique is that Christianity produced an antislavery movement. That's pretty unique.
