I've never seen them work "just fine". The entire point of having windshield washers is to get rid of squashed bugs from the windshield. If you've ever driven at night you are undoubtedly aware that they're terrible at it. You can use an entire container of windshield washer fluid trying to get rid of one lousy bug that's blocking your view.
