I dont think Apple can count on overall growth of their market and they are out of significant carriers with which to launch. They absolutely have to diversify their product offerings going forward to see continued growth for the iPhone 6 product cycle. That means a large screen phone and/or a new handset specifically designed for the $~400 price point.

Canaccord sees iPhone shipments growing 16% this year, 11% the year after. I think they can achieve that without a shift in strategy (and I see a larger and still high end screen iphone 6 as a given). Going downmarket is obvious if Apple sees itself as a phone company, but I'm beginning to think they intend to be a "hits" company, and they are content skimming off the high end until the next "hit" comes along.
