You are mixing up "to unring the bell" with the evolution of changing policy.

As to Reagan; yes of course the basket case was a different basket case! The problems were completely different, that doesn't for a second mean it wasn't a basket case. It wasn't high interest rates and high inflation - it was RUNAWAY high interest rates and inflation. Maybe not as worrisome as what Bush left - but in some ways maybe more so. Reagan addressed those issues. That of course resulted in a temporary downturn - duh. That downturn contributed to the debt issue. So far good. But then Reagan went senile and the second term resulted in unnecessary additional debt.

This is what is so frustrating to me; Both downturns were bad. But then after the economy improved, the debt just continue to ratchet up. Keynesian be damned! The spending of Keynesian stimulus was never corrected. Even now the sequestration is largely a joke at addressing any real cost issues. The economy has developed to a point of constantly needing stimulus from government. The long term result will not be good.
