Remember Hoffer misunderstood what the 60's was about. That is why he quit. And what it was aabout was a paradigm change in thinking that he couldn't see (along with a lot of other people).

PS the 60's was about freeing people from ancient dogmatic scripts they had to follow by convention that were wrong, like sexism and individual manifest destiny.

Hoffer is wrong, IMO, the thing we have learned recently from right wing threads, FOX and Republican behavior is that many of the common people simply do not understand the full manifestation of the issues e.g. what is required for a compassionate well run society; and how the plutocrats are fooling them into voting against their best interests.

And I hope you are not referring to education when you say elitist. Getting an education is not elitist, it is a necessity of life. The unwashed masses generally adhere to whatever dogma they learned from birth. That does not serve democracy well.

I saw wash them, feed them, and educate them.

That's too elitist...Hoffer would say. The unwashed masses are able to choose what is best for them just fine.

All you have to do is make sure they are not disillusioned with democracy. And that requires only two things: transparency and fairness.
