Koan,
You guys live in this fantasy world that scientists do science to get grants. That is so dumb. Scientists do science because it interests them and many start as children; and anyone with a PHD in science can usually find a job somewhere, so that just is not the motivating factor.
Science is a very low-yielding endeavor. Most of it is just finding data points, coming up with theories and models that fit the data, and trying to confirm them with more data points.

That's why scientists are heavily reliant on grant money, because most of their work doesn't yield the type of results that they can take to the bank, so to speak.

Of course, as a self-proclaimed "expert" on science and statistics, you already knew that, LOL …
