The Athenians had slavery, women only got the vote in 1919, we ended segregation in 1967 and just voted in Nixon, Raygun, two bush's and myriad brain dead Republican's. So we are still not educated enough, IMO.

Ancient Athenians were far less educated than your average high school student today. Yet they did just fine with democracy. Moving on to the modern times, the Kurds in Iraq achieved very much while US enforced a no fly zone in the north. By and large they are rural uneducated people. Their achievements did not come as a result of first being educated but because they had an opportunity to be free and had the belief that they can make a difference. So the evidence is very much against your position. I don't need to spend eons in school to learn how to live, and neither does anyone else.

Likely what you were trying to get to was that an ignorant public is easier to fool and control. I tend to agree. But it still takes an orchestrated effort to fool them. So when you provide transparency, true freedom, and real chance to make a difference, the public will *eventually* get it right. The mistakes are a valuable part of the progress.
