I think adverbs are the most difficult concept to grasp and the reason I think diagramming sentences should be taught. My pet peeve of not hyphenating "wholly owned" is difficult for students to grasp because it's an adverb modifying an adjective.

Also diagramming sentences gets them to discern between "ly" words that are adjectives and those that are not.
