That's what idioms are. They don't make sense necessarily if you look at the individual elements or logic. That is what Fowler's "King's English" is good for. It help you understand what may be regional dialects or phrases that in and of themselves may not make sense. For instance in French "mon petit chou" is an endearment, but translated literally it means "my little cabbage" or "my pastry" not something I'd consider flattering in English.
