Chris Christie OKs tuition breaks for illegals

Legislation excludes financial-aid eligibility for students

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is planning a private signing and a later public ceremony for a bill to lower tuition costs for students who entered the United States illegally.

Spokesman Michael Drewniak says the bill will be signed Friday and the ceremony hasn't been scheduled.

He had said earlier that the signing would be at a later date.

The governor announced a compromise Thursday that dropped financial aid eligibility for the students from the bill.

Both chambers of the Legislature passed the revised bill later in the day.

The issue has been a distraction for the Republican. Christie announced during his re-election campaign that he supported the concept of tuition equality but later said he would not sign a bill containing the financial aid provision.
