The last common ancestor between Humans and Chimpanzees was probably an australopithecine. The split was not sudden such as you might have if one group crossed a barrier leaving the other behind. Instead it a more gradual separation of lifestyle with frequent mating between the groups. Eventually diet and habits became so different that little mating continued between the groups and they began to diverge enough that the male and female DNA could no longer produce strong enough bonds to have viable offspring.
