Conservatives and liberals both have different groups they want to protect. Conservatives want to protect the powerful and conserve power in their hands (hence the name "conservative"), and liberals want to protect the people without power from those who do have it and would abuse it, and also make it possible for people without it to have some hope of getting it (or at least to get to a place where they can't be abused).


Mostly. There are some liberals who advocate protection of some of the powerful at the expense of others. Conservatives though, don't even pretend to be on any side but the powerful.
