Yes, that is where I think the evidence points. A traditional view states that chimps evolved from Gorillas and that some chimps evolved into the genus Ardipithecus and some of those in turn evolved into Australopithecus. Those classifications were derived from studies of bones and they have an inherent bias that all hominids were on the path to humans. I think that many extinct species of hominid were on their own evolutionary path and contributed no genes toward what became genus Homo.

There is newer data that is based on statistical analysis of DNA sequences from Chimps, Gorillas, Humans, Neanderthal, and the Denisova remains. These seem to suggest that chimps and humans were still swapping genes as recently as three million years ago.
