Before we invented writing, all knowledge had to be passed down orally. Much of it had to be learned and relearned. With writing, knowledge could be preserved.

I really doubt we all lived in caves all that time. The structures we built from mud and sticks just didn't last. Caves were the only places protected from the elements, where pictures from those times survived.
