I see your comparing local fossil fuel generation to solar power, not grid power to solar power. If the grid is unavailable in your case then it is possible that you've saved yourself money. Although the initial installation, esp. back then would have been a lot more than a fossil fuel generator. The fuel gets used over time, so much of the cost would not be at the begining and thus have a lower time value of money factor.

No fossil fueled generator can come close to the reliability of my system.. 0 downtime the last 12 years.
