No solar design can provide power with virtually 100% reliability. Its dark about half the time, and cloudy some of the rest. If your in a desert there would be fewer (but not zero) clouds, but then sandstorms are a possibility (which not only block off electricity generation but can damage the system).

And no, having battery backup doesn't mean that your producing power almost 100% of the time, it means your producing it when your actually producing it, and drawing it down otherwise. You could also have battery backup to the grid, or to any other source.
