With the loss of the Temple for attonement, what was the new alternative? Think in Darwinistic terms, as i said before it's far less energy expending to worship one god, than the huge costs of maintaining 1000's of temples to various deities, religious feeling was no less for the pagan as any Christian and it was their wisdom from which all is drawn. There's the unifying & tribal identity aspect at work here, the politics, economics of a new rising belief system based on an appeal to human pacifism, asceticism, compassion, gnosticism & empathy, the world had already seen this tradtition for several1000 yrs.
