Koan,
Then support us on raising the minimum wage and helping the poor, directly, now!
Raising the minimum wage isn't going to help. Lot of small businesses will be forced to pay under the table, at least those that don't already.

I'm a big believer in education, especially for poor and disadvantaged children. Better, cleaner, safer public schools should not be sacrificed at the altar of budget cuts.

I also believe in public heath services. Kind of like a "lite beer" version of universal health care. Or a Medicaid that isn't full of holes.

Beyond that and quality public services (e.g. potholes aren't partisan), I can't think of any better ways to move money from the greedy to the needy. Helping the poor in America has primarily been through private charities and donations. Even the super-rich in America have a tradition of passing their wealth onto charities instead of their familial heirs.

Other countries, primarily smaller ones with less diverse populations, can do the whole socialism thing. It's easier when it's local like that. But here in America, it doesn't work that way. Not even here in the People's Republic of California, but that might be because the population here is larger than that of most countries around the world.
