It wasn't an unwritten rule. It was specifically included in most professions' codes of ethics.

The same was true of CPAs when I went into public practice. And federal government, in its wisdom, decided that professions cannot prohibit their memberships from advertising. Under the law, because it restrains competition.

So, if you have an issue with doctors advertising, take it up with your government regulators. But the reality is that the prohibition on advertising was an anti-consumer provision that was designed to protect the professions' memberships.
