I disagree. Senior citizens have more money and vote in larger percentages than young people and the squeaky wheels get the congressional oil/attention. And that bloc is solidly in favor of these programs I agree.

But as to the rest of the populace if they could be given an option to increase their take home by the mount of the withholding--who knows how that would turn out?

Anyway--what can the two sides agree in 2014 that would move the country to a long term fix of SSI/Medicare and Medicaid? Erskin Bowles in in interview with Kiplinger magazine says the per capita Medicare spending has to come down in order for the program to survive financially. I think his commission proposes raising copays and deductibles on Seniors to do this.
