FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 1997--Aggressively supporting the recent International Telecommunications Union (ITU) consensus to adopt a worldwide 56K(1) modem standard, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS) today announced its intent to swiftly implement software upgrades to bring its existing x2-based FastPath(tm) telephony platform into compliance wiTh the new ITU standard.
"Through our participation in the ITU technical committee, we have made substantive technology contributions to support the establishment of a worldwide 56K standard, particularly in the mapping scheme used by the data encoder, and have key patents pending for our work," said George Alexy, chief products and marketing officer in Cirrus Logic's Office of the President. "Consistent with our proactive ITU committee efforts to foster a 56K worldwide standard, we support the extending of fair and equitable licensing of patents covering the adopted ITU standard on a non-discriminatory basis."
Karl Nordling, vice president of modem engineering at Cirrus Logic and a member of the ITU technical committee, said, "The committee has worked diligently to develop an ITU standard that would employ components from both x2 and K56flex. We have actively participated in the ITU technical committee to help drive a resolution for the disparate technology issues and now that this compromise has been reached, we can move forward with our plans to provide our customers with a simple software upgrade to this standard."
"With 56K technology more stable than a year ago, we anticipate a significant industry ramp in demand for products that comply with the existing x2 protocol with upgradability to the ITU standard as ISP's migrate their infrastructures," Alexy noted. "We now see a meaningful path for convergence and intend to aggressively develop and deploy the upgrade path for our products."
56K Product Portfolio
Cirrus Logic added to its original controller-based product line of 56K modem chipsets with x2 technology at this year's COMDEX with the announcement of the industry's first x2 controllerless modem chipset family (CL-MD5620T) with an integrated PCI interface. This new highly-integrated two chip solution allows OEMs to create a low-cost, fully featured, x2-based modem. Cirrus Logic's controller-based 56K solution with x2 technology has been in volume production since March 4, 1997 and it continues to capture design wins with an increasing number of modem manufacturers. Both solutions employ a powerful DSP engine, which gives Cirrus Logic-based modems the flexibility to support the new ITU standard via a quick and easy software upgrade.
