"a job at McDonalds should not produce a "living wage" . . . it should be a stepping stone to a better job"
An antiquated mid 20th century notion, from a world before Big Macs and WalMarts.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The person behind the counter at your favorite fast-food restaurant is more apt to be an adult trying to make ends meet than a teenager earning pocket change, according to findings released Thursday.
Based on analysis of federal government data, only about 30 percent of fast-food workers are teenagers, say Janelle Jones and John Schmitt of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, D.C. In studying the Current Population Survey for 2010-12, they also found that more than 36 percent of fast-food workers over the age of 20 had children.

I've heard people call NASA taxpayer funded jobs "redistribution" , but never heard it applied to wages in the private sector. Do you prefer a system like slavery, where the owner doesn't have to redistribute money to the "hired hands"?
"Why should I try so hard to make $30/hr at NASA when I can make $15/hr at McDonald's" Right now, you can't make $15 at those jobs, so take the one that makes you happiest.
"what is a college education worth then" Priceless... beer busts, panty raids, football games, smart women, maybe a roommate who can get you a NASA job, and it will prolly make you happier than 4 years of selling burgers. |
