This is a disorganized mess. Shameful. It is clear that insufficient effort was made on this project by Obama administration.

WASHINGTON -- Last-minute Christmas shopping may also apply to health insurance this year.

Some consumers will have until midnight Christmas Eve to finish signing up for private health coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that will start on Jan. 1, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said Monday.

The deadline was originally Dec. 15, but then CMS extended it to Dec. 23 because of the many technical problems of signing up for coverage through either state or federal websites like Healthcare.gov.

The Obama administration confirmed Monday that it will slightly push back its deadline to sign up for coverage that starts Jan. 1 under the ACA -- giving some consumers an extra day. The Washington Post first reported the story Monday.

"Anticipating high demand and the fact that consumers may be enrolling from multiple time zones, we have taken steps to make sure that those who select a plan through tomorrow [Dec. 24] will get coverage for Jan. 1," CMS spokeswoman Julie Bataille said in a statement. It wasn't immediately clear if the extension applied to everybody or only to those who had started the enrollment process before midnight Monday -- a date CMS held firm was still the deadline.
