I think you're focused too much on that phrase......consider it a political talking point...a bumper sticker slogan...

Money is a short term motivator.......working conditions, good management are much more important. Suffice to say though, that if the money isn't there, you will have unhappy employees... These are the conclusions of many studies...

Not to the point of Ford when Henry was in charge, but then again you didn't start at IBM in the early 20th century. Still even adjusting for the era, I'm pretty sure Ford was more paternalistic or controlling then most large companies in terms of control outside of work. (Almost certainly not uniquely so, just more than what was typical.)
Yeah, Ford was more paternalistic, but you have no idea what the atmosphere working for IBM was like.....we had a dress code, no booze on campus or at company affairs, we were taught that we were IBM managers 24 hours a day and represented the company......I could give many more examples. We were taught that if a personnel problem developed in your group, you dropped what ever you were doing and focused on that...".PEOPLE ARE OUR MOST IMPORTANT ASSET"
