"One of the better ways to understand this is to look a political polling and the last election. It got to the point where the politicians took to believing the polls they liked, and the polling organizations were starting to cater to their respective "clients" until Nate Silver came along and taught them all a lesson."

The factoid I love it that Romney had jetloads of people flying into Boston for his "victory party", based on what HIS pollsters were telling him! It turned into a big cry-off, as the actual loss occurred.
