Robbery charges filed against trio accused of stealing from dying woman

Robbery charges have been filed against three men arrested in connection with the theft of a dying woman’s wedding ring, taken from her finger, as well as other property stolen from her crashed truck in south Wichita last month, police said.

Daquantrius Shaquill Johnson, Quanique Dontrell Thomas-Hameen and Keith Byron Hickles Jr., all of them 19 years old, made their first appearances Wednesday afternoon in Sedgwick County District Court. Each was charged with a single count of robbery of Danielle Zimmerman, who suffered a brain aneurysm while driving her truck in the drive-through lane of the Taco Bell at 3725 E. Harry on the evening of Dec. 29. Her truck crashed into a speaker box in the drive-through lane after she had gone to get dinner for her family, police have said.
The three men charged Wednesday are accused of stealing Zimmerman’s wedding band, her purse and other items from her as she lay stricken in her vehicle.
Police have said the wedding ring was stolen off her finger. She died the next day.
Children sledding in the area of Mount Vernon and I-135 found the purse, checkbook and one credit card the day after they were stolen, police have said.
“We still have not located the ring,” Allred said Wednesday. “We did find additional property when we arrested the two individuals” Friday night, referring to Johnson and Thomas-Hameen.
Johnson, Thomas-Hameen and Hickles are each held on $200,000 bond in the robbery case. Sedgwick County District Court Judge Joe Kisner scheduled their preliminary hearings for Jan. 23.
A Crime Stoppers tip gave investigators information they needed to identify the suspects in the case, authorities have said. Hickles Jr. surrendered at the probation office in the basement of the Sedgwick County Courthouse Tuesday.
He was wanted for probation violations linked to burglary, theft and drug convictions dating back to last year.
Hickles Jr., who was booked into jail under the name of Hickels, was being held on bonds totaling $305,000.
