ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The Kami iron ore project in western Labrador has cleared the provincial government's environmental assessment.

The development, located near the mining communities of Wabush and Labrador City, is projected to ship eight million tonnes of iron concentrate annually if it proceeds.

Iron ore company Alderon (TSX: ADV.TO - News) owns a 75 per cent stake in the project, with the other 25 per cent held by Chinese steel producer Hebei Iron & Steel Group.

Kami is still undergoing a federal environmental assessment, which Alderon says is expected to be complete early this year.

The project is expected to have a 30-year mining life.
