"I was surprised to hear that CREAF bought Ensoniq since they
already own (I believe) E-mu. Although with Ensoniq's Audio-PCI
card (http://www.audiopci.ensoniq.com/), it seems to make sense."

I was surprised too, since there's sort of a "mortal combat" type feeling about the competing products.
They aquired E-mu Systems (http://www.emu.com) in 1992 or 1993 I think, and are competition to Ensoniq, although most E-mu stuff is in a higher price range. The story goes, E-mu had been supplying hardware to a soundcard company and felt it would be nice to deal with the industry leader if they really wanted to get into the business of supplying chips, thus they got in touch with Creative and Creative figured they could aquire some good technology keeping it from the competition. Although they've failed to execute very well with that technology. Emu plans to disclose a new computer based product on Dec. 15 on the web site. I'm thinking it is the first Emu10k1 chip based product. If done right it would totally smash the competition.
