No democracy is not the main thing that holds us together. Civil society is. A society can be held together without democracy, but if civil society falls apart it can only be held together with brutal repression. Which isn't a statement against democracy, its better than the alternatives, even in many cases specifically better at holding a country together, it contributes to that as well as having other benefits. But it isn't the only thing that holds society together, and it certainly isn't all of society.
