I encountered that in Silicon Valley, where the reality isn't a Google programmer making $3 mil a year, but somewhat underpaid programmers putting in 60-70 hour weeks with the promise that their startup stock options will make them rich. The reality is that the majority of startups fail, and those stock options never make anyone rich.
