From the VLNC home page:

"From February 1982 to April 1987, Mr. Reed was Corporate Vice President and General Manager of IMI/Corvus Systems, a disk drive and computer peripheral manufacturer, where he was responsible for manufacturing, engineering, management information systems and corporate facilities operations."

So Mr. Reed and Mr. Berg knew each other from the failed IMI/Corvus business, where Berg was the biggest stockholder and creditor. These fellows went back a ways together. That makes the resignation more mysterious because Mr. Reed seemingly would have had a close relationship to the co-founder and with the board.
